Ko Yamada

Photographer / Media Artist

Born and based in Nagoya, Aichi, Japan

After receiving both a BFA and MFA from the School of Art, Ohio University (USA), he began his career as an artist in the United States. Following solo exhibitions at FotoFest 1994 in Houston, USA, and the International Photography Conference 1995 in São Paulo, Brazil, he was selected for the Tokyo International Photo Biennale in 1997, and participated in the curated exhibition Medialogue at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in 1998, marking the beginning of his full-fledged artistic activities in Japan.

In 2002, he served as Deputy Director of the secretariat for ISEA2002 Nagoya, the International Symposium on Electronic Art, which catalyzed his shift into interdisciplinary practices spanning photography, sound installations, printed media (such as newspapers and books), performance, and video expression.

Notably, he has been developing the Naruheso Newspaper Project as a form of relational art using the newspaper medium, with ongoing international presentations in Nagoya, Osaka, and Berlin. In 2016, the project was exhibited at the Aichi Triennale International Exhibition. The same year, a solo show at the Fotorama Festival in Kragujevac, Serbia, led to an ongoing series of collaborative exhibitions with emerging photographers from Japan and Serbia, including ground/home and Internal Resort since 2017.

In 2018, he founded the artist collective Chojamachi School of Arts, through which he has been actively organizing exhibitions and educational programs both in Japan and abroad. He also directs PACell, a specialized photography school with a unique curriculum focused on fostering emerging photographers.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, he launched and continues to run ART FARMing TV, a remote-based art broadcasting project. From 2021 to 2023, he served as the Director of the media art festival “Nagoya Nihonhaku: Streaming Heritage,” held three times during this period.

Recent projects include the traveling AR-based Japan-Serbia joint exhibition Metroplex 2023–2021 (Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya), the official Bangkok Design Week 2024 exhibition Our Imaginative Boundaries, and its 2025 sequel Merging Out of Boundaries, where he also performed. He is currently co-producing an in-game installation in collaboration with Epic Games and Serbian media artist Dejan Ilic at the Serbia Pavilion of Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai. He is also leading the production and direction of the ART FARMing project, a collaborative program affiliated with the international art festival Aichi Triennale 2025.

As an educator, he teaches photography, video, media literacy, design, and fine arts at institutions such as Aichi Shukutoku University, Nagoya University, Nagoya University of the Arts, Nagoya Zokei University, Nagoya University of Arts and Sciences, and Chubu University.

日本、愛知県名古屋市出身・在住

米国オハイオ大学芸術学部写真学科にてBFAおよびMFAを取得後、アメリカで作家活動を開始。1994年のFotoFest（米国・ヒューストン）および1995年の国際写真会議（ブラジル・サンパウロ）での個展を経て、1997年に東京国際写真ビエンナーレ入選、1998年に東京都写真美術館での企画展Medialogueに参加、日本での活動を本格化させる。2002年、国際電子芸術祭ISEA2002 Nagoyaにて事務局次長を務めたことを機に、写真のみならず、サウンドインスタレーション、新聞・書籍など紙媒体を扱うプロジェクト、パフォーマンスや映像表現など、多様なメディアを横断する表現に取り組んでいる。

 特に新聞メディアを通じたリレーショナル・アートとしての《なるへそ新聞プロジェクト》を名古屋・大阪・ベルリンと国際的に継続展開し、2016年にはあいちトリエンナーレ国際展にて同プロジェクト作品を発表。また、2016年セルビア・クラグイェヴァツ市で開催されるFotorama Festivalにおける個展をきっかけに、2017年以降、日本とセルビアの新進写真家による共同展《ground/home》《Internal Resort》など協働展を継続的に企画・制作している。

2018年にはアーティスト・コレクティブ「長者町スクール・オブ・アーツ（Chojamachi School of Arts）」を設立し、代表として国内外の展覧会や教育活動を展開。写真家を育成する独自カリキュラムを備えた学校「PACell」も主宰、現在も継続している。

コロナ禍の2020年以降、非対面型アート放送プロジェクト《ART FARMing TV》を開始・継続中。2021年から2023年には「なごや日本博：Streaming Heritage」メディアアート芸術祭（3回開催）にて運営ディレクターを務めた。

近年では2023年にはAR技術を用いた日・セルビア共同展《Metroplex 2023–2021》を東京・大阪・名古屋で巡回、翌2024年には《Our Imaginative Boundaries》展をバンコクデザインウィーク公式企画として開催。2025年には続編となる《Merging Out of Boundaries》展を同フェスティバルで発表し、パフォーマンスにも出演した。現在は大阪・関西万博セルビア館にてEpic Gamesおよびセルビアのメディア・アーティストDejan Ilicとのコラボによるゲーム内展示の企画と制作に関わっており、2025年秋に開催される国際芸術祭あいち2025（Aichi Triennale 2025)の連携企画事業ART FARMing のプロデュース・ディレクションも進行している。

 また、教育者としては、愛知淑徳大学、名古屋大学、名古屋芸術大学、名古屋造形大学、名古屋学芸大学、中部大学などで、写真・映像・メディア・リテラシー・デザイン・ファインアートに関する授業を担当している。
